Abstract :
Managing Your Own Career in Turbulent Times
Project managers MUST become the CEOs of their own careers. In my 12 years working almost exclusively with project managers I have noticed a marked lack of career management that once had a PM asking me “Is this all there is?” In a world that becomes more complex and uncertain with every passing year, it is imperative that project managers take control of their own destinies so that they can survive the unpredictable nature of an ever-changing global environment.
To begin managing one’s career, a PM needs to have a good sense of self – the foundational piece in any good leader. However, because of the extremely busy nature of the PM’s world, there is very little time dedicated to self-awareness and personal mastery. This one-day program is dedicated to self-awareness as it relates to career management, especially in turbulent times. Additionally, the day will look at the need for enhanced flexibility, adaptability and creativity necessary to best plan one’s career. Key components of the day will be (1) personal mastery; (2) creating personal vision; (3) challenging and changing mental models; (4) using systems thinking for competitive advantage; and (5) rediscovering personal creativity and innovation.
The primary goal of the class is for a project manager to take a more thorough and critical examination of her/his life to answer the compelling question “What matters?” in terms of a career and a well-lived life.
